McCasky, Claymore and Wells Fargo Recognized by EDCC!

From April 28th-30th members of the JEC staff attended the Spring Economic Development Council of Colorado (EDCC) conference in Montrose. The conference was filled with great information and gave staff members the chance to network with their peers from across the state. Each year during the spring conference, the EDCC hosts an awards luncheon to recognize recipients with their annual EDIE Awards. This year Jeffco was highly prominent with winners from three categories. Commissioner Kevin McCasky was recognized for Volunteer of the Year, and Wells Fargo Bank was recognized as Company of the Year. Additionally, JEC Vice President, Michelle Claymore, was recognized with the state’s highest ED honor, as she was named the 2009 Economic Developer of the Year. JEC would like to send a big congratulations to all of the winners and thank them for all the work they do for our organization and our county.

PTAC comes to Jeffco

The Colorado Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is opening a satellite office in Jefferson County. The main office is located in Colorado Springs, but the Colorado PTAC staff wanted to open an office in the metro Denver area to meet with local clients. JEC staff was approached and offered the use of one of its dedicated offices in the Denver West Office Park.

There is a lot of interest by Jefferson County companies in government procurement. JEC, Jefferson County and the West Chamber have supported efforts to establish a PTAC in Colorado for many years. JEC and the Jeffco Workforce Center hosted a Procurement Conference last year that had close to 500 attendees from around the state. Jefferson County also has one of the highest number of companies in the state receiving SBIR and STTR federal research grants and houses two of the largest prime government contractors—Lockheed Martin and Ball Aerospace & Technologies.

There are 93 PTACs across the country to aid small businesses in getting contracts with federal, state and local governments. Colorado was awarded a PTAC from the US Department of Defense in 2009. To keep the operation running, $200,000 in matching funds are needed against the federal grant. If you would like to financially support the PTAC effort in Colorado which helps our small businesses, please contact Michelle Claymore at 720.544.5503 or at mclaymore@jeffco.org.

Issues Forum: 60, 61, 101

Amendment 60 and Proposition 101 will collapse Colorado's economy. In addition, Amendment 61 shuts down Colorado’s ability to build or expand its schools, roads, hospitals, college buildings, light rail, water and sewer systems, prisons—any of its capital infrastructure—blacklisting Colorado on the list of 50 states for where companies locate jobs, business centers and capital investment.

This forum was held on June 30 at
the Mount Vernon Country Club. We heard from Rick Reiter of Reiter and Associates and Marybeth Jones of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck.

For more information on these issues, please visit the Don't Hurt Colorado website.

Colorado Companies to Watch

JEC is proud to be a partner with Colorado Companies to Watch. This annual program energizes the state of Colorado by recognizing second-stage companies that are developing valuable products and services, creating quality jobs, enriching communities, and creating new industries throughout the state. Second-stage companies help improve the economic vitality of Colorado by accounting for much of the economic growth and economic independence of individuals throughout the state. The 2010 gala will be held on Friday, June 18th at the Denver Marriott City Center. Individual ticket and table sales are now available. Congratulations to all of our winning Jeffco companies!
